UIR is a trade association of the transport sector and is closely linked to Confindustria which represents the domestic freight village "network". A freight village is a defined area within which all activities relating to transport, logistics and the distribution of goods, both for national and international transit, are carried out by various operators. In order to encourage intermodal transport for the handling of goods, a freight village must preferably be served by a multiplicity of transport modes (road, rail, deep sea, inland waterway, air).

UIRNET S.p.A. is a purporse-built company whose aim is first of all, the introduction of the "e.logistics" project and its development. The ongoing industrial and technological development of modern societies together with the need of mega-storage centres for the ditribution of goods, urges a rapid boost of the land combined transport system supported by a "network" of terminals at regional and national levels. UIRNET's commitment is to achieve an homogeneous development of this "network" of teminals in order to provide a high standard of services, in terms of operations and management system. This is to attract bigger shares of commercial traffic on domestic land routes and to strenghten the link between the manufacturing districts (the root of the Italian industrial economy) and the retailing areas (medium-sized and large metropolitan areas)
